I believe that this is a book most NZers should read,
'Rogue Economics', by Loretta Napoleoni, (2008)
Though the following points she raises in the book are interesting. This is a nation that our culture is getting into bed with. What do we really have in common with them?
"circumstances not ethics or morality, guide the Chinese wise one"
"To Mao, history was not the transcendent force of progress found in European culture, but a temporal and spatial sequence of unconnected events. Thus the centuries between the old empire and the advent of maoism were forcibly "wiped away to change peoples perception of history". This surgical operation hermetically joined China's ancient imperial past to its present".
"Political participation is an alien concept in Chinese culture, one that holds equally true for the old imperial China and for Communist China.Power is achieved and maintained only through violence and force".
"The transition from Mao's China to Deng's market-state implied the deregulation of the economy and nothing more as China had never existed as a nation state. Moreover, the central Government had never really protected its citizens, but rather it had oppressed them."
